Cycling on Terschelling: Enjoying the Island from Hotel NAP
Now that we have a little more free time, we enjoy going on trips together. We prefer to stay active without rushing, leaving plenty of time to stop along the way. For our cycling holiday, we chose Terschelling this time. Hotel NAP in West-Terschelling became our base — and it turned out to be exactly the right place.
From the ferry to the hotel in minutes
Our holiday began during the ferry crossing. As Terschelling drew closer, we could see the Brandaris lighthouse rising above West-Terschelling. Once we stepped off the ferry, we did not have far to walk with our luggage: Hotel NAP is located in the heart of the village, just a few minutes from the harbour.
After checking in, we could immediately explore the charming village centre. Everything felt close by and easy to navigate. That is ideal when you want to spend a few days cycling without having to worry about luggage or transport.
A good start to every day of cycling
A beautiful bike ride requires plenty of energy. That is why we began each morning at a relaxed pace with a good breakfast. Over coffee and something tasty, we discussed our plans and decided which part of Terschelling we wanted to discover that day.
There is no need to bring your own bicycle. Terschelling has several excellent bicycle rental companies, and it is easy to rent a suitable bike in West-Terschelling. Standard bicycles, bikes with gears and electric bikes are all widely available. When we returned, we could store our bicycles securely in the bike shed behind Hotel NAP.
Cycling for miles without rushing
Terschelling is a wonderful island to explore by bicycle. Its extensive network of cycle paths takes you through forests, alongside dunes, across open polders and through charming villages. The landscape changes constantly, so the route never becomes dull.
One day, we cycled towards Midsland and Formerum. The next, we continued further east, regularly pausing along the way to enjoy the views. Because the cycle paths are so good, we could ride at a relaxed pace and give our full attention to the surroundings.
The wonderful thing about cycling on Terschelling is that you can set your own pace. We stopped whenever we saw a beautiful view, enjoyed coffee along the way and occasionally took a walk through the dunes. There was nothing we had to do and all the time in the world.
Returning to Hotel NAP
At the end of the afternoon, we cycled back towards the Brandaris. As soon as it appeared above the village, we knew Hotel NAP was close by. We left our bikes in the shed and found a spot on the terrace.
With tired legs, a cocktail in hand and plenty to talk about, we looked back on the day. Afterwards, there was no need to go anywhere else: we could also enjoy a delicious dinner at Hotel NAP. It made our stay even more relaxing.
A cycling holiday worth repeating
Hotel NAP offered everything we were looking for. The hotel is easy to reach from the ferry, enjoys a central location in West-Terschelling and provides a comfortable base for cycling trips across the entire island.
A good breakfast before setting off, beautiful routes through nature, followed by delicious food and drinks on the terrace — for us, that is exactly what a cycling holiday on Terschelling should be.
